INDICATIONS: Ampicillin suspension is indicated for the treatment of acute and chronic infections of the upper and lower respiratory tract, genitourinary infections, enteric infections, typhoid fever, otitis media, meningitis and gonorrhea caused by susceptible bacteria.
Human Pharmacokinetics: Following oral administration, ampicillin shows a bioavailability of approximately 50%. Peak plasma concentrations are reached within one to two hours. Ampicillin binds to plasma proteins in approximately 20%, and are distributed widely to synovial fluid, bone tissue, bronchial secretions and gallbladder. The cerebrospinal fluid penetration occurs only when the meninges are inflamed. The volume of distribution of ampicillin corresponds to 19-27 liters. It is partially metabolized (10%) by hydrolysis of the beta-lactam ring, approximately 40% is excreted in the urine and 0.1% in the bile. The half-life of elimination is 1 to 2 hours.
Ampicillin is a semisynthetic penicillin which acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis.
CONTRAINDICATIONS: Patients with hypersensitivity to penicillins.
PRECAUTIONS: Should be administered by prescription and under medical supervision, as it may cause hypersensitivity reactions from mild to severe, such as anaphylaxis. Should be used with caution in patients with mononucleosis.
RESTRICTIONS OF USE DURING PREGNANCY AND BREASTFEEDING Several preclinical studies have shown no teratogenic, but not established the safety of its use during pregnancy. Like other penicillins, is secreted in breast milk, so that, during lactation, should be used only after risk-benefit assessment by the treating physician.
ADVERSE REACTIONS: Adverse reactions associated with the use of ampicillin include allergic reactions of varying severity, immediate or delayed, such as hives, itching, laryngospasm, angioedema and anaphylactic shock. Can also cause nausea, vomiting, epigastric discomfort, flatulence and pseudomembranous colitis.
DRUG INTERACTIONS AND OTHER GENDER: Probenecid may increase and prolong plasma concentrations of ampicillin.
CHANGES IN RESULTS OF LABORATORY TESTS: In the presence of high concentrations of ampicillin in the urine may occur glucosuria false positive when using copper reduction methods.
PRECAUTIONS IN RELATION TO EFFECTS Carcinogenesis, Mutagenesis, Impairment of Fertility: No reports ampicillin associated with potential carcinogenic, mutagenic, teratogenic, or affecting fertility.
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION:
Children: 100 to 150 mg / kg / day in 3 to 4 doses.
3 to 6 months (5 to 7 kg): 250 mg every 8 hours.
6 to 12 months (7-10 kg): 250 mg every 6 hours.
1-3 years (10-14 kg): 500 mg every 8 hours.
3-6 years (14-20 kg): 500 mg every 6 hours.
Daily doses may be increased to 200 to 400 mg / kg / day, if necessary, especially if the type and severity of the infection requires it, as in the case of meningitis.
Premature infants: The recommended dose in the first days of life is 100 mg / kg every 12 hours, followed by 50 mg / kg every 12 hours.
In severe infections the same limits apply over the children.
MANIFESTATIONS AND MANAGEMENT OF OVERDOSE OR ACCIDENTAL INGESTION: No specific antidote. Ampicillin may be removed by hemodialysis.

RECOMMENDED STORAGE: Store at room temperature not exceeding 30 ° C, and dry.
